Laying the foundation for total health

In some ways, one could say that chiropractic care is a bit like building a house - certain things have to happen in a particular order in order for everything to stand strong and work together correctly. When building a house, if you tried to build your walls before you had a solid foundation, your walls would be weak and eventually may even collapse. If you tried to build your roof before the walls were ready, you would run into the same problem. These concepts apply to your body as well, and chiropractic care addresses many common reasons why people experience pain and other health issues. If something is not right with your body's foundation, than that needs to be addressed before true health can be achieved. With chiropractic care, your body has to go through a particular plan of care in order to repair itself correctly and fully. There are three general phases of chiropractic care . . .

Phase 1: Relief Care

If you are in pain when you come into our office our first objective is to help you reduce pain and start feeling better as soon as possible. A short course of spinal adjustments scheduled over a two week period will diminish your symptoms if chiropractic care is for you.  Depending on the severity this acute phase of treatment could take longer, however by two weeks you will know if I am addressing the issue.

Phase 2: Corrective/Restorative Care

At first patients are all about wanting to correct the real cause of their symptoms. However, when their pain is gone many people lose the incentive and opt to discontinue care after the initial Relief Care phase, choosing to call if/when the symptoms return.  I certainly encourage moving into the corrective phase of chiropractic care.  The goal here is to help bring your body back to 100% functioning, allowing muscles and ligaments to heal more completely, and to help prevent re-injury and promote even greater function and mobility than prior to an acute episode.  This type care often requires weekly adjustments over 1 to three months.

Phase 3: Wellness Care

Once your body has fully healed and you've reached maximum improvement I encourage monthly adjustments in order to address underlying problems that can lead to weakening of the spine that cause a susceptibility to re-injury.

Most importantly, however, regular chiropractic care allows the brain to communicate to the organs and tissues of the body without the interference of spinal subluxations.  Diminished or altered communication between the brain and the body's tissues due spinal misalignments (subluxations) can lead to dis-ease within the body and a susceptibility to pathology.  Read What is Chiropractic.
